Our Response to Coronavirus
Having just celebrated our first anniversary, Covid forced 2nd Act Books to close in March 2020. Like so many other businesses, we took a hit, but since books have a long shelf life, we were able to open our doors again in June. We used the lockdown to inventory our 15,000 titles so we can sell online through ABE and Biblio.
Other Ways to Support 2nd Act
We are also affiliated with Bookshop, an online book purchasing platform designed to benefit independent bookstores by providing a socially-conscious alternative to Amazon. They carry new books that you wouldn’t be able to find in our store. Every purchase made from Bookshop pays a dividend to all affiliate bookstores. If you use this link, 2nd Act Books benefits even more.

After teaching at UVA for thirty years, owner Daphne Spain depends on the kindness of staff, family, friends, and customers to keep the store going. Daphne has found a new home despite her total lack of business experience or sense. The best part of being surrounded by so many books is that former students and colleagues, local authors, and the occasional celebrity stop by to browse.
The store has a large selection of children’s and young adult books, some in foreign languages. An entire wall is filled with mysteries and sci-fi. The window displays typically feature current events, Black Lives Matter, cookbooks, and kids’ books.
Knowledgeable staff members can guide you to your favorite genre. You will recognize faces from past incarnations of the store, like Barbara, Michael, and Michele. Ashton, Erica, and Scott are more recent additions to the team. Please stop by and let us help you find the perfect read.
We have come a long way since our empty shelves of February 2019. Thank you to everyone in the community who has donated books and/or time to help us succeed!
